Michelle Mabbott - Collage with textiles, stitch & mixed media

In this 1 day workshop learn techniques, and design clues, with simple exercises to do. There will be enough free time thereafter, to produce personal, and unique, collages. A valuable guide will be issued - an inventory of collage materials and techniques to take home.

The mixed media collage workshop will include using - stitch and textiles, natural elements, printmaking pieces, found objects, UFOs, using your stash, recycled resources, and making your own papers.

Mostly all materials, a large selection, and tools will be supplied.  Such as fabric, coloured, patterned and plain paper, cartridge paper, additional glue sticks, paper scissors, fine permanent markers, old book pages, paint and brushes, embroidery, twine, and other threads, rulers, pencils, small and mini gelli plates.

Materials to bring: most of these are readily available and economical things, which attendees already have. 

  • your own fabric scissors (paper scissors provided) 
  • a glue stick
  • 2 needles: 1x small and 1x large, e.g. embroidery and a thicker needle, like a tapestry needle. 

Optional extra, Lynne Britten of Batik Oetoro supplies fine fabric pens.

Michelle Mabbott, with a career of being a multidisciplinary fine artist, graphic designer, illustrator, and printmaker, will be presenting a talk and day-long workshop on Collage. Discussing a vast display of petite to larger collage pieces, including 3D pieces and artist’s books. Also collage history, different styles of collage, and current trends.  

Hear about her experiences, collaborating across 2 challenges with the internationally renowned, Danish collage artist Lisbeth Degn. She will show a collage handbook they are creating. 

Timely with the Art Gallery’s 2023 Archibald Prize announcement of artist Julia Gutman for portrait painting. Her winning portrait of singer-songwriter Montaigne ‘Head in the sky, feet on the ground’ 2023, with its stitched and painted layers. Plus analyzing a recent and impressive Matisse exhibition, which included many collages at the AGNSW.
